Jean-Claude Hillen (other sources: Jean-Paul) founded a trading company in the City of Bree in 1846. He soon turned his main interest on pipes and other tobacco related goods.

Particularly in the 1960's and still throughout the 1970's the brand Hilson of Broers Hillen B.V. (Hillen Bros. Co.) was quite successful in many European countries. They produced large numbers of machine made pipes covering the whole range of shapes and finishes. The pipes were well respected for good quality and craftsmenship at very moderate prices.

Rarely seen there are also nice freehands from this era stamped MASTRO and signed by A.M. Sanoul, who is otherwise completely unknown as a pipemaker.

All the same, in 1980 Hillen faced major financial problems. At this time there was only a second manufacturer of briars pipes in the Benelux countries, the Elbert Gubbels & Zonen B.V. in the Netherlands. The Belgian competitor being in trouble, Gubbels used the favour of the hour and bought up the company. The reason is plausible: in some countries, particularly in Germany, Hilson held larger market shares than Gubbels' mainstay brand Big Ben.

The Hillen plant in Bree was closed down shortly after and ever since then Hilson pipes are manufactured in Roermond, NL.
The Tinder Box was the chain of tobacco stores started by Edward Kolpin, Sr., who carved Ed's Hand Made pipes. The store, eventually sold to a Canadian conglomerate, eventually reached 200 retail outlets by 2007, and in the 40 years it operated on a large scale a great number of pipes were made for The Tinder Box by well respected makers. A few include the Tinder Box Unique, made by Charatan, Christmas Pipes by Ascorti, and the Tinder Box Noble and Exotica, made by Shalom Pipe Factory, Mauro Armellini did make the Verona and Napoli lines.

Ed Kolpin, Jr., opened a small tobacco, pipe, and cigar store in Santa Monica, the Tinder Box, in 1928. Later it moved to its current location in 1948 where it began serving the many Hollywood celebrities living nearby. Part of the attraction were the famous pipes handmade by Kolpin himself. In 1959 Kolpin began a tobacco-store franchise, at first locally and then by the mid-1960s there were Tinder Box stores in malls across America. == Introduction ==

[[Image:Hardcastle Ad.jpg|left|thumb|Hardcastle Counter Display Ad, courtesy Advertising Antiques]]Hardcastle was founded in 1908 by Edmund Hardcastle and built itself a good reputation among the numerous British mid-graders. In 1935 Dunhill started to build a factory next door to Hardcastle in Forest Road, Walthamstow, London E17. The family owned Hardcastle Pipes Limited sold 49% of its equity to Dunhill In 1936.

Along with closing down its pipe factory in Notting Hill in 1946 Dunhill bought the remaining shares, turning Hardcastle into a 100% Dunhill subsidiary. As members of the Hardcastle family continued as executives in the company’s management Hardcastle retained a certain independence.

This ended in 1967. Dunhill merged Hardcastle with Parker (100% Dunhill as well). The new Parker Hardcastle Limited also absorbed the former Masta Patent Pipe Company. Hardcastle’s Forest Road plant was immediately given up and the production of Hardcastle pipes was shifted to Parker’s nearby St. Andrews Road factory – now consequently called Parker-Hardcastle factory.

In fact this put a definite end to Hardcastle as an own-standing pipe brand, and none other than Edwin Hardcastle, the last of the family executives, spoke frankly and loudly of Hardcastle pipes being degenerated to an inferior Dunhill second.

Today Hardcastle pipes use funneled down bowls that are not deemed suitable to bear the Dunhill or even the Parker name (as well as obtaining briar from other sources).

Timeline
*1903: Edmund Hardcastle establishes the brand
*1936: Family sells 49% of the Hardcastle Pipes Limited shares to Dunhill
*1946: Dunhill buys the remaining shares, but the family continues to manage the company
*1967: Dunhill merges Hardcastle with Parker. The new Parker-Hardcastle Limited company absorbs the Masta Patent Pipe Company also.
*After 1967 it is speculated that Hardcastle became the brand for "Parker Seconds"

[[Image:hardcastle1.jpg|thumb|left|1944 6 day set, courtesy of FinePipes.com]][[Image:hardcastle2.jpg|thumb|right|1944 6 day set, courtesy of FinePipes.com]]
John Loring states in "The Dunhill Briar Pipe - 'the patent years and after'" that in the absence of sales receipts, or other items of provenance, Hardcastles cannot be accurately dated. Loring further states that he knows of no way to distinguish the briar source when looking at Hardcastle, Parker, or Parker-Hardcastle pipes. We should not expect to find any actual Dunhill production in these lines, and while one might be there, it is doubtful we will ever be able to determine it .

The pipes pictured are from a 1944 6-day set. Made during the war when Dunhill owned 49% of the company, and two years before they bought the remaining shares. German vulcanite was unavailable during the war, so these pipes are fitted with horn stems. The original listing notes "...the quality of workmanship is beyond reproach, the smooth pipes being free of obvious pits or fills, and with rich, deep color; and the sandblasts crisp and deep. Drillings are spot-on."
Comoy's pipes were given shape numbers in the 1909 catalogue and also names for each shape, but it would seem that these numbers were NOT stamped on the pipes until sometime in the 1920s. The earliest known is from 1925. The shape numbers are all 3 digits until after the Cadogan acquisition of Comoy's in 1979, when some shapes were introduced with 4 digit numbers. However, they may have been introduced earlier in 1976, 1977 or 1978.

On pre-Cadogan pipes additional letters can be found after the three numbers:
* M on Meerschaum lined pipes.
* P on Panel shaped bowls. This may not always be the case as I have now seen a photograph of a non panel Shape 309 with a P.
* C on some shapes with curved bits. This does not seem to be universal for all curved bits and it would appear to be mainly on Princes and Bulldogs.
* F believed to indicate a "Fishtail" bit. Verified on an early 1930s Virgin Briar with the shape number 206F and a fishtail bit exactly like the Dunhill F/T, that was not introduced until 1950.

Made by hand in Rome, Italy the Mastro Beraldi brand is crafted by the Pierluigi family using artisan techniques and economy of scale. The bowls are not fraised using templates, but instead are turned completely by hand- one by one. Mouthpieces are made of molded vulcanite which is then hand-finished inside and out to insure a smooth draw when the pipe is smoked. In addition each tenon is made of Teflon, insuring against breakage if the pipe is knocked about.
Aldo Pierluigi has been making pipes since the early 70's (perhaps some of you old-timers remember the Pierluigi brand), and has constantly refined his skills to where today he and his family can produce a great pipe at a great price. Aldo Pierluigi is one of the hardest workers in the pipe business putting in more than 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

Pat Sommer is a pipe maker who lives in central Indiana. Starting making pipes around 2019, and incorporates interesting materials into the design, like bamboo shanks trimmed with mastodon horn.
Valitchkahttps://pipedia.org/index.php?title=Rudolfs_Patent&diff=55251Rudolfs Patent2023-10-31T06:23:52Z
Valitchka: Created RUDOLFS PATENT page

RUDOLFS PATENT pipes appears to be a copy of a Peterson Patent in many respects. It has a VERY similar stamping style on the name, the arched wording, similar design of the R to the P in Peterson, with the word PATENT tucked in below the arched name, just like Peterson as well.

This example is hallmark dated to 1909, with Birmingham city marking. Under the name on the shank side is PRIMA, which is an early Comoy's grading from the same era, interesting enough. The stem appears to be what the Patent is applied to, but have no info as to the actual patent details. The stem tip is similar to a Peterson's P-lip in design, but with a wider flat center area, and dual forked draw holes, instead of the single hole of a Peterson. The tip is also similar to at BBB Glokar stem tip, also from the same era.

I found another example from a previous Ebay listing, to show similarity to the Peterson's stampings on the shank, and also includes more stamping showing on the top of the stem.
Valitchkahttps://pipedia.org/index.php?title=File:Second_example,_see_shank_stampings.jpg&diff=55250File:Second example, see shank stampings.jpg2023-10-31T06:22:23Z
Valitchka:

Introduction
Greetings to all GBD fans,

Finally finished an update to the GBD Shapes page, the number of shape numbers listed is now about doubled!

Remember that the descriptions are somewhat arbitrary on my part, your idea of what an 1/8 bent stem looks like may not be the same as mine!

I've had access to a couple of older catalogs recently and it is ocassionally difficult to describe some of the shapes that were made 80 years ago in modern(?) pipe terminology. For example, many of these older shapes seemed to have bowls that were angled slightly forward relative to the stem; some were only canted forward a few degrees while others had enough of a forward tilt that I felt that a reverse bend notation was required in the description.

One change I've made to the Shapes page is that I have deleted the example photos column. According to my server access records there just weren't enough people viewing the files to warrant the amount of server space they were taking up.
What I may do in the future is move some of those example photos to the lines page, there I can select one example per finish instead of having multiple examples sorted by shape number.

This list is guaranteed inaccurate and incomplete !

I have tried to determine if there was some system behind the GBD numbering scheme and so far I can't find one. They are not entirely random but they don't seem to follow a pattern either. Maybe I don't have enough information yet to figure it out.
One thing I feel confident about is that GBD used the same numbering system across all of their pipe lines, I have 3 or 4 GBD seconds that have the same model numbers as identically shaped firsts.

Note: A lot of this info is second-hand and as I have received conflicting descriptions for the same number so I do not guarantee that all of these are correct. Please feel free to correct me if you are positive that I have blundered! :-)

Like most people, I am liable to interpret shapes and angles differently than others might interpret them; again, correct me if I am totally off the mark!

This list is only a small percentage of all the model numbers. If you have any additional numbers or can fill in the "unknowns" please send me the information. If you do send information please try to limit it to the four key identifying items used in the list below. Bit information is not too relevant as GBD bits were not necessarily the same between lines and years for the same shape number. For example I have four 269 Bulldogs and between them there are three different shaped bits.

The shapes marked with a ? have conflicting descriptions, shapes with an * are non standard bowl shapes, and stem angles with a "rev" conotation refer to pipes with bowls that are canted forward.
Introduction
This is a listing of some of the various pipe lines manufactured by GBD, I have gathered this information from a variety of sources including posts to the "alt.smokers.pipes" usenet newsgroup, and from the book "Who made that pipe?" by Herb Wilczak and Tom Colwell.
I have read and have been told that Mr. John Tolle is working on a definitive book on GBD, I am eagerly awaiting it's publication!
Until then I offer this meager webpage as a source for others like myself wishing to learn more about GBD pipes.

If you have any additional models or can fill in the "?"s and especially the finish descriptions please send me the information. I am also open to suggestions on what information needs to be listed, thanks!

A brief history of GBD
The company was founded in Paris France in the 19th century by Ganeval, Boundier and Donninger who were no longer associated with the company by the turn of the century. By the time they left the GBD name was well established and thus retained.
In 1903 an additional factory was built in England and ran by Oppenheimer. The Paris factory moved to Saint-Claude in 1952. Since 1981 the majority of GBD pipes come from the English factory. At about that same time GBD merged with Comoys, since then all production for both GBD and Comoy comes from a single factory. ( I wasn't kidding when I said it was brief! )

More history and addition information can be read in the main GBD article.

Notes on the listings
* The first list below is of GBD firsts, i.e. stamped GBD.
* Below that is a list of 2nds or pipes not stamped GBD, there may be lines misidentified as 2nds which may be firsts and vice-versa.
* These lists are presented in alphabetical order with no emphasis on quality rankings. Near the bottom of the page is some information about quality ranking.
* GBD pipes were manufactured both in England and France ( E/F ), some lines were possibly produced in both locations.
* Incomplete/unknown information is represented by a "?"
* Descriptive info received from others noted with their initials.
* This information is guaranteed inaccurate and incomplete! :-)
* Corrections, updates and additional information gladly accepted!
* 02/19/00 - I've recently acquired a small collection of Oppenheimer GBD catalogs from the 70s & 80s and will be adding a lot of additional info to the page as time allows. It is apparent from studying these catalogs that certain lines might be considered a "first" or a "second" depending on the year of production, a line might carry the GBD logo one year and the next year be marketed as a "stand alone" line. It's also apparent some lines change over time, an example would be pipes in the Penthouse line were originally a "charcoal gray" finish but later were produced with a "tobacco brown" stain.
** As I add descriptive info from these catalogs I will mark that info with a "-catalog". It's often interesting and amusing to read some of the prose used.
** The catalogs refer to various finishes including one called "take off" a dual tone staining technique that darkens just the softer part of the grain creating a higher contrast.
** If anyone out there would like to donate or loan me additional GBD catalogs please let me know.
** I have deleted the two date columns from the line tables, it's very apparent that there is not a lot of date documentation available. Any date info I do come across will be added to the description column.
* 02/26/00 - added info from 1980 Oppenheimer GBD catalog.
* 03/04/00 - added info from 1981 Oppenheimer GBD catalog. Catalog format changed in 1981, not as much text as previous catalogs but nicer photos.
Plus Sized Pipes
In addition to the pipe line and shape information stamped on the pipe GBD also had codes for plus sized pipes. These codes in ascending order of size were...

*Conquest
*Collector
*Colossus

Perspex refers to the lucite/acrylic bit material GBD used, the clear bits used on various models are Perspex.

Metal rondelles were discontinued after the merger with Comoy.

Note: The information presented on this page is the sum total of my knowledge about the subject ( sad isn't it? ). I am not connected to GBD in anyway except for having a few of their pipes... :-)

I am interested in buying older GBDs at reasonable prices, specifically any of the Bulldog or Rhodesian shapes. At this time I do not have any GBDs that I wish to sell or trade.

Below are some edited messages pulled from the a.s.p. newsgroup pertaining to GBD identification.

Author: Gregory Pease, Email: glp@netcom.com, Date: 1996/05/18, Forums: alt.smokers.pipes

Dating GBD's is difficult. On older pieces with hallmarked silver
bands, one can look up the hallmark. Once GBD and Comoy's became one,
the linear "Made in England" stamp became the round "Made in London
England" stamp used on all later Comoys.

Even the stem is not a sure-fire method. All the way through the 1960's
and early 1970's, some pipes were ftted with moulded stems, while others
were hand-cut. Not all hand-cut stems are marked as such, and it
doesn't depend on grade. (In my collection is one of the finest
Pedigrees I've ever seen. It is unsmoked, made in the 1960's, and has
one of the poorest moulded stems I've ever seen on a production pipe!
But, the wood would make a Dunhill DRH, or a Charatan Coronation blush!)
That said, you can be assured that if the stem has a painted GBD
rondelle, rather than a silver or brass one set into the stem, that it
is a late-model, made after the merge with Comoy. These were the
beginning of the dark-days for GBD (and Comoy, for that matter) in my
opinion.

In some cases, the grade gives some clues. Xtras haven't been made
since the 1930's, for instance, and the Century was first introduced
some time in the 1960's or 1970's as I recall, from what scant literature
I've been able to acquire. GBD introduced new shapes and dropped shapes
almost every year it seems (an exaggeration, I'm sure), so if you had a
lot of shape charts, you might be able to find a range.

Higher Grades
Author: Gregory Pease, Email: skydog@value.net, Date: 1997/05/06, Forums: alt.smokers.pipes

...In a circa 1973 chart which I have, here are the descriptions of the
higher grades:

*Virgin -- "Only the finest of closely grained briar is utilized for this exceptional pipe. Natural finish"
*Century -- "A golden finish created to celebrate over a century of manufacturing the finest briar pipes."
*New Era -- "The beauty of this pipe's perfect briar is accentuated by the richness of the 'take-off' dual finish."
*Prestige -- "This pipe features a black handcut perspex mouthpiece which precludes discoloration and 'bad taste' after continual smoking. Only the finest of the fine-grained bowls are selected for this handsome matt virgin finished briar."
*Prehistoric Perspex -- "The deep sandblasting sillhouettes the grain in bold relief. The crystal clear mouthpiece creates an attractive contrast to the deep dark finish."

Hi Jerry,

I just took a look at your web page. Here's a little information on GBD. In October, 1996, Mike Hagley had some info of GBD which I downloaded. Here's his list in probable descending order of grade:

*Pedigree
*Pedigree I
*Pedigree II
*Straight Grain
*Prodigy
*Bronze Velvet
*Virgin
*Varichrome
*Prestige
*Jubilee
*New Era
*Prehistoric
*International
*Universe
*Speciale Standard
*Ebony
*Tapestry
*New Standard
*Granitan
*Sauvage
*Sierra
*Penthouse
*Legacy
*Concorde

Mike got his information from GBD catalogs 1976 to 1980. I personally have in my collection three beautiful Pedigrees, a bent, a bulldog, and a prince. The grain is unmatched and womderful. I also have an interesting Prodigy Sandflame, half bent tan sandblast free form with plateau top. I think it's an unusual shape for a GBD. That's about the extent of my GBDs. Jerry,

Nice to see someone actually DO something with a GBD page, rather than just talk about it. At any rate, as a GBD collector for 25 years, I'm happy to see this.

For decades, the largest GBD (and Charatan) retailer in the world was Smoker's Haven in Columbus, Ohio, when it was owned by Joe Ziev, mid-40s to mid 80s. (The shops bearing that name in Columbus today are pale imitations; Joe sold out in the 80's to two architects who ran the business into the ground and sold the name to two other persons). SH carried about 5,000 pipes in stock, and many of the odd shapes GBD made were done for Smoker's Haven. Jack Tompkins and Frank Nagy are good sources for rememberances of the old days at SH.

A few comments:

* In addition to the pipe line and shape information stamped on the pipe
* GBD also had codes for plus sized pipes. These codes in ascending order
* of size were...
* Conquest
* Collector
* Colossus
* My understanding is that these larger size codes were primarily used on
* their higher grade pipes such as Virgins and Pedigrees.

Your size codes are correct, and in proper order, BUT they were not restricted to the higher grades, but used all through the line, from Rockroot on up. I have even seen Digby's marked Colossus.

* Perspex refers to the clear acrylic bit material GBD used on various models.
*Correct. Perspex was a patented/trademarked name for lucite/acrylic.
*The metal rondelle set into the bit can help identify the age of the pipe,
*if the rondel is silver or gold the pipe is pre '70s.
**FALSE. The color of the metal inlay has nothing to do with age. I know where you are getting this info, and have asked the person who says this what his authority is. He admits he has none, other than a guess. A metal logo does mean the pipe predates the late 80s, and that's about the only conclusion one can draw.

My brother Mike went through his old SH flyers, and the list someone forwarded to you is accurate.

Bill Unger, who is sec'y of the NASPC is a great source for GBD info, as the central Ohio are is a good place to turn up GBDs. Joe Ziev was a pioneer in mail order, having a mailing list worldwide of more than 10,000 names, so GBDs at least during his time, were widely sold, but many many are still in Ohio.

I will go through your list of finishes later and make comments on them, to add to your descriptions.

Terry

I received another e-mail from Terry listing several finish descriptions, I've added this info to the page and have noted his input with a -TH, I've also corrected the items Terry mentioned in his e-mail.
Thanks Terry!
I have a GBD prestige, shape number 335, which is absent from your shape
chart. It is an apple shape, with a straight stem and round shank.
Hopefully you will be able to use this in the chart.
I recently purchased a #9436 Midnight, a line that I do not
the line?
Re: 9436 Midnight Straight Billiard
More descriptive information for you--since this estate pipe has
not been smoked much, I think the finish has not been affected
by usage: dark brown smooth.
The saddle stem logo is a white paint on. The stem is a rather inexpensive
looking pearlescent material (not very attractive in my eyes).

I have a few shape numbers for you that I did not see listed--I
have a:

255 Pedigree Canadian Billiard Vulc Saddle
357 Rockroot Quarter Bent Plum Vulc (sold as Plum not Prince)
549 International Quarter Bent Bulldog Vulc
667 Rockroot Half Bent Pear (?) Vulc
2006 New Standard Bulldog Straight Vulc
2006 Sierra Bulldog Straight Vulc
2871 Century Quarter Bent Dublin Vulc
9464 Speciale Lovat Saddle Vulc
9552 Fantasy Collector Calabash Full Lucite
9564 Virgin Conquest Bent Dublin Freeform Vulc Danish Stem
Thanks for putting this endeavor together. It is appreciated.
Hey Jerry I was checking out your page when I noticed that I have two GBD
shapes you don't list:

256 - Canadian - straight - oval/saddle
7002 - Dublin - 1/4 bent - military push

If you need them, I can send scans for your perusal. Thanks for providing the
info you have, and keep appreciating those GBD pipes!
Hi Jerry,

I just secured an unsmoked Xtra today, and thought I would give
you a description of the pipe for your edification:

The finish, in my opinion, is a medium reddish smooth. The grain is "nice",
with some birdeye, but not exceptional. The pipe
is a #1331, which is a straight billiard. The stem has a gold
rondelle, and I am ignorant relative to molded vs cut, but it is
nicely formed and joins well with the shank. The shank is stamped London England.

Thanks for all the information you have provided. I have put the
information to good use in purchasing GBDs.

BTW, the #667 Rock Root I described to you earlier as a possible
pear is a 1/2 billiard, I have been told by those that have more
knowledge than I.
I have some contributions of models/shapes not included so far:

Original, 2006, bulldog, medium brown smooth, straight diamond saddle
shank. Gold metal rondelle in stem. London, England. About Group 3
size.

Sieur, 719, billiard, smooth/sandblast, 1/8 bent broad saddle stem.
Gold metal rondelle in stem (but now lifted out). London, England. It
seems the Sieur were rounded billiards, stained dark brown, mostly
sandblast, with a smooth ring a la that on a bulldog but instead very
broad, here about 10 mm. Also smooth on the bottom of the stem, with
some carving instead of sandblast near where it meets the bit. This one
has a saddle bit and shank that is Canadian-style but squared off on the
sides. About Group 4 size.

Also I have a GBD Standard, 110, which you describe as a pot. Mine is
an only-slightly-squat billiard. Shank is straight as is the stem, with
saddle bit. Finish is dark brown sandblast, but smooth and flat on the
bottom of the stem (so it will sit). Gold metal rondelle in stem.
London, England. About Group 3 size.
Dear Jerry,
it was very nice to find such an interesting page devoted to pipes like yours.
I'm a proud owner of a GBD pipe, too. It's similar to Savinelli's model 601.
On the left side, there's the GBD logo by the side of the word "CHEVREUSE",
both carved. On the right side, also carved, there's the words "ST CLAUDE"
on top of the number "1025". On the left side of the black plastic mouthpiece,
near the briar, shines the GBD logo, in golden brass. The finish is natural,
smooth and the veins form a very beautiful design. The briar has darkened
after all these years of smoking, but I remember it was very clear when I
first met this piece.
This pipe was a gift a nice young lady brought me from England, in the
early 70's. If possible, I'd like to read comments about this pipe.
Best regards!
Mr. Hanna,

I have a GBD shape that can be added to the shape chart. The pipe is a
Virgin shape #789 which is a straight pot, the pipe is small length is 5"
depth of the bowl is 1.5" inside dia. of bowl 1" outside dia. 1.5" shank dia.
is 1/2". The pipe has the linear Made in England stamp and the brass oval
GBD in the stem, stem is molded. I bought the pipe last year, unsmoked, and
the shop where I bought it told me they had found when cleaning out one of
their storerooms and they believed it was an early to mid 1960's pipe, it
also came with the original box and sleeve. The pipe is a great smoker. I
hope this helps you in your search for GBD knowledge.

Charles Di Franco opened Di Franco’s Pipe & Tobacco Shop at 797 Highway 33 Trenton, NJ 08619, in the 1960's. He was a master pipe maker and his sterling reputation was backed up by superior quality and incredible service. Mr. DiFranco has since passed away, but in his honor, DiFranco’s Pipe & Tobacco Shop keep his spirit alive by selling only the finest, highest caliber pipes. His pipes are few and far between, and one would be lucky to obtain one. written by Peaceangel12000@yahoo.com

Edwin Wilke founded Wilke Tobacco in 1872. As the story goes, according to a 1937 New York World-Telegram article, he had no sons, and so he taught his two daughters, Anna and Louisa Wilke, how to make pipes and blend tobacco, and by his death in 1930 they were well versed in both trades, and adamant about only using quality briar. In 1950, when they were the focus of an article in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, they were the only women pipe makers in the United States, and had sold pipes to Herbert hoover, Lord Halifax, John Steinbeck and others. The sisters also blended pipe tobacco and repaired pipes. They did not, however, smoke pipes.

Wilke prided itself on "unpainted pipes", and promised that only Macedonian briar was used, without paint, varnish, plug, or putty of any kind. As of 1950, some of their pipes were selling for up to $100.00, or just under $1,000.00 dollars today. By the release of a 1970 New York Magazine highlight of the shop, that claim had risen to $500.00, or over $3,000.00 today.

The Wilke Pipe Shop was located for decades at 400 Madison Avenue and 48th, in New York City, and in the 1970s opened a satellite store in the famed Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia, selling Wilke pipes made by Steven Johnson. In 1983, the brand was purchased by pipe maker Elliott Nachwalter and his wife, Carole Burns. They continued to operate the Madison Avenue store until the early 1990's, at which point the couple moved to Vermont and Pipeworks & Wilke was born as a mail-order business.

Even after the marriage of Burns and Nachwalter, the business continued, with Nachwalter selling pipes in Manchester, New Hampshire, and Burns blending tobacco in Montpelier, Vermont. Burns continues to keep the 125 year old brand alive at http://www.vtpipes.com/.

As of July 1 2017 Wilke Tobacco was passed on to John Brandt of Fall River Ma. Where the Wilke blends will continue to be blended by hand to discerning custumers all over the world

George Yale Pipes & Tobacco was, once upon a time, a pipe shop located on Sixth Ave. in New York City. Like a lot of tobacconists specializing in pipes, along with those well-known marques of wider appeal, they also had briars made under their own name.
The following Old Mariners look like they definitely were made by Comoy's, due to the Made in England stamp, plus the shape numbers correlate to Comoy's shape chart: Examples below 228c is a Prince, and 185 a Billiard. The basis for this article is an excerpt from A History Of Comoy's and A Guide Toward Dating the Pipes written by Derek Green . This article was published in the June 2006 issue of The Pipe Collector. The official newsletter of the North American Society of Pipe Collectors (NASPC), and is used here by permission. It's a great organization--consider joining.
Francois Comoy and his brothers started making pipes (probably clays, boxwood and beech) in 1825 in the small monastic town of Saint-Claude in eastern France. Francois and his son Louis discovered that briar had vastly superior qualities and from 1848 made pipes only in this wood. In 1879 Francois’s son Henri, who was born in 1850, moved to London with a small bag of tools, but a great deal of experience. Henri set up a small factory in Seven Dials which is today known as Cambridge Circus. He was one of the prime movers in the establishment of the briar pipe trade in London and is credited with being the author of the appellation “London Made”.

He was helped at first by some of his brothers and around 1891 was joined by his two nephews, Louis and Charles Chapuis. Louis took the name of his adoptive parents. By 1895 the business had outgrown the Seven Sisters site and a new factory was built in Newcastle Place, Clerkenwell. By 1905 markets were being sought in America and the extra business required a new factory to be built in 1913 at 72 Rosebury Avenue.

In 1914 the partners, Henri Comoy and his nephews Louis and Charles, incorporated the business as H.Comoy & Co. Ltd. Before the 1914/18 war Henri was also joined by his sons, Adrien and Paul who were born after his nephews arrived in London. In 1921 Sam Zinberg was appointed Director of Sales for the USA and the House of Comoy was established. Henri Comoy died in 1924 at the age of 74 leaving the company in the hands of Louis and Charles.

In 1929 the company was invited to join Cadogan Investments Ltd. This was known as “The Merger” which consisted of the Civic Company and Oppenheimer Pipes with their associated companies. This merger was formed in order to create co-operation between the various companies.

In 1937 a new, model and splendidly-equipped factory was opened in Pentonville Road to accommodate additional staff of several hundred. The next generation had joined the firm by the time the Second World War broke out. Louis Chapuis Senior joined in 1938 and Pierre Comoy in 1947 after service in the Royal Armoured Corps.

The Second World War was a difficult period for the company, because the whole of industry in Great Britain was turned over to the production of armaments and the war effort, consequently the manufacture of pipes ceased, except for a small workshop. After the war ended in 1945, it was an uphill struggle for all British companies to once again get established, and it was not until 1950, and the opening of a new purpose built factory in Aldershot, that production nearly met demand.

The main manufacturing companies in the merger known as Cadogan Investments Ltd were Civic, Comoy’s and Marechal Ruchon & Co Ltd, and in the early 1960’s manufacture came under one management, but the marketing departments continued working independently for a number of years. My 1965 catalogue makes the following statement “And now, we the Comoys of the fourth generation, together with those of the fifth, Pierre Comoy and Louis Chapuis, continue to follow the course set by our forefathers, who would be gratified to see our latest ultra modern plant in Aldershot Hampshire.” Comoy’s remained a family owned company until it was finally taken over by Cadogan Investments during the early 1980’s. Cadogan have continued to manufacture Comoy pipes to the present day and, under Michael Adler, the Comoy brand is their flagship and efforts are being made to once more re-instate the well known quality of the brand.

The collector of Comoy pipes is really only interested in those pipes made before Comoy was finally taken over by Cadogan in the early 1980’s and I have therefore concentrated on that period. I have also, for the purpose of this article only briefly mentioned some of the other brands made by Comoy’s such as Cecil, Every Man, Town Hall, Guildhall etc, where they can contribute some evidence to help in dating.
1920 Hallmarked Super Sports w/Double stamp
The following pipe is unique in that it is double stamped, “London Made” and then fainter “Made in London”. Both are in the rugby style (click the image to enlarge):
Special STRAIGHT GRAIN
Here's a brief explanation from "MrCan" Tony Soderman: The History of the "Special STRAIGHT GRAIN" (like all early Comoy's) is murky at best! Special STRAIGHT GRAINS were rarely available and were offered with the same frequency of Specimen Straight Grains (generally regarded as the "rarest pipe in pipe-collecting" as only one in every 10,000 Comoy's became a Specimen). Also, much like the fabled Specimen, Special STRAIGHT GRAINS were NOT included on Comoy's Price Lists! (They were not distributed with other Comoys but were held at the factory and were available upon special request to retailers.

Dating: This is stamped in a circle with “MADE” at the top, “IN” in the middle, and “ENGLAND” forming the bottom of the circle. This can be seen on a Cecil as early as 1910 and on an Old Bruyere of 1921 and more frequent from the 1930s. It can also appear as “MADE” arched, “IN” below, and “ENGLAND” arched the other way. These stamps are in an oval rugby-ball shape rather than a circle round shape.
