He has learned his craft from the likes of [[Franz von Matt]] in Switzerland,  [[Rainer Barbi]] in Germany &  [[Josef Prammer]] in Austria.


The workshop is situated near the Lake Traunsee in the Salzkammergut region. David carves between 100 and 120 tobacco pipes each year by hand from briar root (erica arborea).
Why does he carve pipes? He is fascinated by the archaic shapes of tobacco pipes which are one of the oldest  sculptures of human beings. And he likes the simplicity and complexity at the same time, which all good pipes have in common.
