Carey "Magic Inch" pipes have been made and sold by the EA Carey Smokeshop since 1948. Carey claims to have sold "hundreds of thousands" of these pipes. The Magic Inch System consists of a ventilator and a filter. An air chamber, called the "Magic Inch", is inserted between the bowl and the vented mouthpiece. It is vented at the top and at the bottom, which allows cool outside air to enter and mix with the smoke inside the chamber. This reportedly causes condensation to occur. Tars, oils and moisture drop to the bottom of the chamber, to be absorbed by the Papyrate II sleeve. In theory, the filter spreads the moisture over its entire surface so it is exposed to evaporation by the outside air.

Carey Magic Inch pipes can be readily identified by a boxed letter C on the stem, along with a distinctive series of three vent slits.
