Renaissance Pipes

Thomas Bahder about his background:

"I was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1955 and came to the U.S. at age 6 with my parents. When growing up, my primary interest was in science and especially in physics. By training, I am a theoretical physicist with a Ph.D. in physics from Rutgers University. My interest in pipes started in the 1970's when I was in high school. At that time, I smoked many pipes and I always wanted to make a pipe. However, I did not have enough money or time to make pipes then because I was spending a lot of time studying physics. Since finishing school, I work full-time as a physicist for the government. Recently, I work on theoretical issues in application of the theory of relativity to problems in space-time navigation. (One particular application is the GPS (Global Positioning System).) In addition, since about 1998, I am an active part-time flight instructor in single engine airplanes. I have five children and an incredibly supportive wife that has made all this possible.

After a long layoff from pipe smoking, in 1999 I started to smoke pipes again. In this same year, I began making briar pipes. I have been very lucky to have made contact with Trever Talbert (→ Talbert Pipes) - an incredible pipe maker. Trever has been very generous with his time by providing me with detailed technical exchanges, essentially pipe making lessons by email. He has been my mentor in making pipes and an inspiration for making high quality pipes.

What a long strange trip it's been!"
