Trey Rice Pipes

Welcome to Trey Rice Pipes! Trey Rice is a part time pipe maker located Fort Worth, Tx with a love for making things.

Trey's obsession with pipes began in the summer of 2009 while in college at Texas A&M. A friend of his introduced him to pipe smoking while on a camping trip. He didnt know it at the time, but that was the beginning of an incredible journey of making pipes. He began to look around to purchase a pipe of his own and quickly found out his tastes were more expensive than a college budget would allow for. Instead of buying a pipe, Trey set out to make one with the knowledge available online. He has always enjoyed wood working and making things, and thought making a pipe would be a fun project. That fun project has turned into something of an obsession. The pipemakersforum.com became the primary source of most of the knowledge he gained over the next few years. After a year or so, Trey began to sell my pipes at a local cigar shop and expanded my skillset by exploring the different styles and shapes.

In college, Trey studied architecture. In the six years of undergraduate and graduate level studies, he found that the same ideas and thoughts that shape architecture into a building are used to shape a block of briar into a pipe. Form, function, proportion, parti, detailing, and durability all apply equally to both architecture and pipe making. These principles inspire and drive my pipe making philosophy.

After college, Trey moved into a small apartment with no space for a shop. Pipe making went on hold from 2013 until the beginning of 2017. At this time, Trey and his wife bought their first house with a small add on room to the garage that was perfect for a woodworking shop. Trey began making pipes again, meeting new pipe friends, and improving his craft. A big improvement came when Trey's grandfather's metal lathe was passed down to him. Its an old 1970's craftsman farm lathe, but it allowed Trey to add a new level of precision to my work. At this time, He began attending more pipe shows and was able to be exposed to many, many more pipes. These experiences had a cumulative effect to the online research and learning from earlier in his pipe making career.

About My Pipes

All of my pipes are hand crafted from the finest briar available, shaped and finished by hand. Each pipe is fitted with a hand cut stem of Ebonite or Cumberland and will pass a pipe cleaner from the bit to the bowl.
