Vitale Piero
Vitale Piero's passion for woodworking started when he was just a child in the workshop of his grandfather, trying to make something out of the pieces of wood that he cut for him (his grandfather was a carpenter and then became a lutist and sculptor once he retired).
Vitale has always loved manual work and experienced many different arts during his life, painting, playing music, and wood carving, to name a few.
He discovered the world of smoking pipe‘s in the 2014, when a friend of his introduced him to it. Just few months later, he started carving his first pipes and I soon feel in love with the work.
He was inspired by the work of Victor Yashtylov, Kent Rasmussen, Tom Eltang, Eder Mathias, Gamboni and many others. Through them he found that pipe making can be much more than handicraft, discovering that with creativity, skills, and by designing and carving harmonious shapes that highlight the beauty of the briar, a pipe can became a piece of art.
Piero's current production is about 80 pipes per year, all completely handmade with rasps, files, sand paper, dremelI, and a small lathe that he uses for the stems, which are from ebonite rod. Most of his production are smooth, but he also makes some sandblasts and a few rusticated pipes.
He uses plateaux and ebouchon extra extra quality brair stored in his workshop for about 2 years before using it. Most of the briar that comes from Tuscany or Calabria, while the stems are made with German ebonite.
