He treats the briar with hot oil to enhance its beauty and smoking qualities. Previous to pipe making, he pursued an art degree in college, worked as a carpenter, and met wood Sculptor Ray Holt (Pappy), with whom he served a two year apprenticeship. He worked for two years for a Florida based pipe company before striking out on his own.
