Philipp Lang at the lathe

Living in the City of Königstein on the outskirts of Frankfurt, Philipp has been making pipes since the early 1990s. Inspired by his grandfather smoking a pipe in his garden, Philipp started making his first pipe at the age of 16 in his father's workshop. His first pipe making supplies were bought from Rainer Barbi and Bjarne Nielsen.

Nowadays, Lang's briar is hand selected and sourced directly from saw mills, predominantly in Italy and Spain. Some pieces are made from the legendary Corsican briar dating back to 1984 (he has about 200 blocks still in stock). The quality of the grain is the nucleus of his continuous strive for excellence. Mouthpieces are handcut ebonite, Cumberland or artificial amber. Pipes are exclusively made by hand with a quantity of approx. 30 pieces per annum. The majority are smooth, with sandblasts fairly rare, and no rustication. Applications are mammoth ivory, amber, horn, silver, gold, bamboo and precious woods.
