Line 1: Line 1:
Tanzania, formerly Tanganyika, and prior to that German East Africa, is the home of the Lake Amboseli meerschaum mines, and has been the home of many different brands of pipes made of African meerschaum and other materials.  The official name of the country is now the United Republic of Tanzania in one of the nation's official languages, English, and Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania in Swahili, the other official language.  After colonial rule by the British, Tanganyika became a country in 1962, and in 1964 became Tanzania.  Tanzania is located on the eastern coast of Africa, and Dodoma is the capital.  To most, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar might be more famous names, but pipe smokers will be more familiar with Arusha, near the Kenyan border to the northeast, where pipe production was centered for half a century.  Unfortunately with the closing of the Lake Amboseli meerschaum mines in 2006, there are no currently produced Tanzanian pipes.
