Renown author and avid collector, [[Ben Rapaport]] has over 3000 tobacco related volumes in his personal collection, and has created what is likely the most comprehensive list of tobacco related books and publications in English. It is organized by topic, although many entries cover a range of tobacco related topics.  He started this list in 1987, and has been updating it as new works come to his attention. Over time we hope to integrate Ben's extensive list into this article, meanwhile the list from the Fall of 2022 is available here in PDF format: [https://pipedia.org/images/5/55/A_Bibliography%2C_Rev_5.._.docx.pdf A Bibliography for the Pipe Smoker and Pipe Collector (Ben Rapaport, Fall 2022, Rev. 5)].

''The Illustrated History of An American Folk-Art Curiosity. The Civil War Soldier's Tobacco Pipe'', by Ben Rapaport. From the publisher, "Acclaimed historian and antiquarian of all things tobacciana, Ben Rapaport has broken new ground with this well-researched  treatise of the smoking scene on the battlefields and in the camps and the prisons of the War Between the States. This is the never-before-told story of the Union and Confederate soldiers’ reliance on tobacco and their creativity in fashioning wood pipes, one of the most enduring genres of patriotic folk art from the war. Extensively illustrated with over 100 soldiers’ pipes, many of which exhibit remarkable craftsmanship. The soldier’s hand-carved pipe tells an enduring American story of duty, sacrifice, and patriotism. A remarkable literary achievement with no better a writer to tackle the subject than that of Rapaport. A long-overdue addition to our American Civil War collective.  (Hardcover with jacket; 300 pages with 175 B&W and color illustrations; recent auction results with prices realized; indexed.)" By Neil Archer Roan. From the publisher, "Know the man? Of course, we're all online and read his blog A Passion For Pipes with enthusiasm. He has become the gold standard for our collecting pastime for visionary thought and expression through word and camera. For some time, there's been great interest for Roan to release something in print. The wait is over. In connection with the 2014 [[Chicagoland International Pipe & Tobacciana Show]] (May 2-4) of his collection of Comoy Blue Riband briars, Roan has prepared an extensive companion guidebook and first-ever complete history of one of the most talked-about brands including an extensive shape, dating, and name listing. Few contemporary pipe-books embody this level of sophisticated research required to tell such a story. Much the same can be said of the photography and complementary graphic design of the book- brilliant!- visually and in concept. Oh! were there time enough for Roan to apply himself to tell the stories of all of our favorite old-time makes. Beautifully composed, it is also artistically constructed of the finest printing materials. From heavy-coated stock for its 168 pages to hardcover binding and dust-jacket, the finished product is as much a pleasure to the hand as it is to the eye. This is a limited-edition release of 500 impressions. If you were unable to visit the Chicago exhibition now is a choice time to secure a copy by mail for your library." From the publisher, "Released in September 2010, this is the second edition of Confessions! With 50% more content than the first, 24 chapters and more illustrations, now all in color, this new, expanded edition, Schrier gives the pipeman more of that irreverent, much-needed counsel on being a better pipe smoker.

Not a "how to" book, but a lifestyle guide. As a cautionary note, I will warn the easily-offended and politically-correct person, that this little book throws punches, though I believe all of them are above the belt. I hope you find my views amusing and thought provoking and that you enjoy reading my words as much as I enjoyed struggling to cobble them together professional-like. This book is unlike anything the pipeman has seen written about his treasured passion of the pipe, tobacco, and how he is to get on with it. For the beginner and knowledgeable alike. With a foreword by Marty Pulvers". Available from [http://briarbooks.com/ Briar Books Press]

From the publisher: ''What they were saying in 1901 about it in . . .“Pipes and Tobacco. A Bright and Interesting Discourse on Smokers” by J. W. Cundall. Long 8vo. Cloth, 6d. To-day.— “Mr. J. W. Cundall has written a little volume which all lovers of the fragrant weed will read with interest and amusement. In addition to an account of the history of tobacco, and the science of it growing and blending, many entertaining anecdotes are related of famous smokers, and a large amount of odd information of use to smokers imparted. For a modest outlay of sixpence, at which price it is published, no devotee of ‘My Lady Nicotine’ need lack this latest appreciation of his goddess.”''

"My how times have changed! That's inflation for you. No longer sixpence, but then who other than Briar Books Press discovers such unusual, worthwhile, and most importantly, such entertaining literature for the pipe-smoking man. Hidden for over a century, this delightful gem is a look into our collective past for all the reasons smoking is such good medicine for the soul. Historical yet in many ways contemporary, Pipes and Tobacco is the smoking man's guide to everything which is important to him. Author Cundall spins an entertaining read for the Englishman on so many of the topics of interest to him at the turn of the last century. From tobacco as a luxury and aid to meditation, to social smoking and as a medicinal aid, to soldiers and smoking, to poetry, to juvenile and royal smokers and smoking in parlaiment, to smokiana and the Brotherhood of Smokedom, Cundall covers the subject concisely yet comprehensively. Peppered with quaint tobacco and briar-pipe advertisements, Pipes and Tobacco includes a never-before-divulged statement attesting to the origin of J. M. Barrie's secret Arcadia mixture as written in his 1890's novel My Lady Nicotine. A delightful and informative read that will leave you wanting for more." From the publisher: "After a lengthy absence, original poetry written for the pipe-smoking man is back. With a reverence for the past and a youthful taste for the present, Assaad G. Bachaalani has wrought a comprehensive selection of poems and limericks surely to delight the pipeman who demands the most from his smoking sojourns. Topics as diverse as the sandblasted finish, fishing, Dunhill, dogs, Kaywoodie, women, death, the young piper, the best mixtures, pipe gurgle, the new self-consciousness smoker, types of collectors, sweet mixtures, driving with a pipe, the master carver versus apprentice, types of briar grain, cigars, pressed tobaccos, pipe cake—and much more. Bachaalani has written a rich, poetic tapestry of words that are soothing on the mind and, unlike a good deal of poetry, written sensibly to exclude no one from its finer meaning and enjoyment.

'''Editor's note''': I regret that I was not aware of the Ephemeris, or The Universal Coterie of Pipe Smokers until recently. I just bought my first and only copy of the Ephemeris (the last issue, Winter - Spring, 2005) from [http://www.pipestyle.com/dunn1.htm Hermit Tobacco] at the MAPS show in Milwaukee. I hope to buy more editions on the used market as I can find and afford them. The last issue has 116 pages of excellent reading. I'm very envious of long time Coterians, especially those who knew Tom personally, or enjoyed regular correspondence with him.

It has recently come to light that one of Tom's last wishes was that the Ephemeris not be revived in any form. Pipedia certainly honors that request. However, if any of the contributors to the Ephemeris would like to re-publish their individual contributions or memories of Tom here, that would be most welcome. '''Pipe Friendly Magazine''': J. Galloway Company (need information): Pipe Friendly was dedicated to the "preservation and promotion of the pipe in whatever form." Edited by OoOPS member Joel Farr, this publication was less flashy than some of the others. However, it was full of useful information for smokers and collectors, with articles written by well-known pipe collectors and retailers. Detailed articles about pipe brands appeared in every issue. So did no-holds-barred discussions of pipe smoking/collecting issues. Sometimes, this produced controversy, but PF made up in guts what it may have lacked in glitz. Devotion to the pipe hobby came through in every page of every issue.[http://fujipub.com/ooops/bsmay96.html#contents]
