From Pipes, Artisans and Trademarks, by José Manuel Lopes

Manuel Fernandes Casimiro is a Portuguese artisan, now in his sixties. He is a cow herd who entertains himself by carving blocks of olive and ash wood. He is known in his home village of Canal Caveira (Gràndola) as "the pipe master". He sculpts his pipes from pieces of wood he takes from trees, with just a penknife, a rasp, and a small saw.

The bowls are almost always animal heads -- those with dears have been particularly successful. He acknowledges that he does not have the knack of doing human figures. Once painted, they are sold around the region's fairs.
