Dr. Shotton's is a system pipe distributed by Foster Products, INC of Cleveland, OH. It is designed so that a pipe cleaner can be sent entirely through the pipe by removing a plug in the heal of the bowl. The idea being to make stem removal unnecessary. It has an open slot in the top of the tube where it crosses the bottom of the bowl, which "permits a FULL down draft--even burning--STAYS LIT". The ad further indicates they left the briar unsealed and unvarnished to permit evaporation and allow the tars from the tobacco to color the pipe naturally.
