Justin about himself:

My name is Justin Bain and I’m 27 years old. I started carving recently but have spent quite a bit of time studying with local carver [[Brian Kalnitz]] here in Buffalo. I began assisting with repairs and buffing and polishing pipes, and at the same time watching and learning as much as I could about the carving process. Brian and his father Milt have a combined experience of 50 plus years in the business and both are amazing artisans. I can think of no better teachers than these two men. There have also been several good friends that have helped me out along the way, providing advice, direction and motivation, without whom I could not have got where I am. I think it only appropriate to mention them here. My good friend Colonel Davis, who has always been a great source of ideas and advice and has helped me stay out of the clouds and keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. My friend Lars Wiberg, who was also my first customer. Lars has always been a source of information and inspiration. Many long conversations about carvers, shapes, process, etc. have occurred between us and has been invaluable to my progress.

On the personal side of things, I earn my living in the construction field. I grew up in a rather large Italian family and had the benefit of that support structure. I have always been close to my family, and they are one of the most important things in my life. Being a very independent person, I obtained my first full time job at the age of 13, and apply that same drive and motivation to my pipe making. I am passionate about a few things in life, among them pipe making, photography and Sailing. I learned to sail with my friend Eric about 3 years ago, and have been hooked ever since. During the summer months, if I am not working or sleeping, it is likely I am out on the boat enjoying the tranquility of wind and water.

Windjammer Pipes began as a hobby and evolved into a passion. What started as a desire to create a handcrafted one of a kind pipe at a reasonable price
for myself, turned into the desire to provide the same for others. I don’t believe that I possess any talent greater than my passion to create something beautiful
that can be appreciated for years to come. I have a love for the classics… simple, beautiful and traditional, and I try to represent that in most of my work.

All of my pipes are hand cut and hand shaped without the use of a lathe. They are hand drilled fitted with vulcanite or Lucite stems and finished with natural
stains and pure carnauba wax. I believe that a pipe should be a natural fluid piece of art, so there are never any fills and rustication is used when it will enhance
the beauty of the pipe.

I hope that you enjoy the site, and maybe even find something that you like. I would love to create a pipe that will become a favorite and hopefully a treasure.
