Atwood pipes were apparently made for, or in collaboration with Atwood M. Tempe by Comoy, and perhaps other pipe manufactureres.

Todd Platek reports:

I own the Atwood pipe shown in Valitchka’s reprint of Atwood’s patent drawing. The patent number in the reprint matches the patent number on my Atwood pipe, and the shape appears identical. Additionally, the pipe bears the stamp “53 [large] 2 [small]”, likely indicating the second pipe he made in 1953. The Atwood name is prominently displayed in script. The stem bears an “A” in script.


Al Jones has written an article outlining the restoration of an Atwood pipe on [Rebornpipes.com] where he writes:

The Atwood pipes were equipped with a permanent aluminum cup at the base of the chamber, with a bore hole. Atwood M. Tempe (Los Angeles) invented the system about 1950. The patent (U.S. PAT. 2652062) was granted in 1953 and the author partnered with Comoy’s to produce the pipes...
