The Beney Company was founded by Robert E. Beney, who invented and sold the first Beney mechanical lighter in 1919, three years prior to Dunhill. Beney also designed an automatic mechanism for Dunhill's hunting horn lighter, which operated by inverting the horn.

The company was sold in 1938 and renamed Beney, Ltd., operating in Saville Works, Croydon Road, Beckenham, Kent. Beney, Ltd. produced pipes under the name Saville and also owned H. Perkins & Sons, who at one point made Ascot pipes.
