Yes, that is correct, the flattened head of this “Evening Dress” shape (in our terminology) was exactly developed for that purpose. Hener, K. S., Product Line Director - The White Spot Smoker's Accessory Division and Walthamstow site.
The Opera Pipe. Compact and oval-bowled to fit discreetly in a vest pocket for a quick smoke between acts.
We've been talking to Mr. Hener about the Opera shape and, he sent us this incredible information:
I found a reference in our catalogue ”About Smoke - fourth Edition” from 1922.Hener, K. S., Product Line Director - The White Spot.
There were in fact three (!) flat bowl QUAINT shapes shown, two were straight and one was bent.
- Straight: originally Quaint shape “FS”
- Bent: originally Quaint shape “FC”
- Straight: originally Quaint shape “FB”, a flat Bulldog.
