In selecting a meerschaum pipe it is advisable to take assurances that the product is indeed carved from a block of meerschaum, and is not made from meerschaum dust collected after carving and mixed with an emulsifier then pressed into a pipe shape. This is not always that easy to do, in many years of collecting I have never seen a meerschaum pipe marked anything other than "solid block meerschaum." There is no uniform grading authority, so there is no reason for a seller to announce what everyone knows is an inferior composite product. Thankfully, composite meerschaums are fairly rare in well-carved pipes over $50 USD. I think this is because the better carvers don't waste time carving composite meerschaum. | ||
